New student residences on the Saarbrücken university campus: open for winter semester arrivals

The halls of residence newly constructed by WOGE Saar on the Saarland University campus in Saarbrücken will be available for standard rental from the 2026/2027 winter semester. These and the other planned residences are designed to provide attractive options for incoming students, who generally begin their studies in the winter semester and often struggle to find affordable accommodation at this time of year.
Applications are now open. The halls of residence will be available for interim use from 1 March onwards. The search and rental process is a smooth one thanks to close cooperation between Studierendenwerk Saarland and Saarland’s residential property company WOGE Saar.

The three newly constructed halls of residence, containing a total of 234 housing spaces, should be available for standard rental for the 2026/2027 winter semester (i.e. from 1 October 2026). As the construction project was completed earlier than originally expected, the halls will be available for interim use before the standard rental period begins: the apartments can be rented from 1 March 2026 until the start of the winter semester. This interim use prevents the halls of residence from standing empty until the winter semester, whilst also providing early support to students who need short-term housing solutions.

A cooperation agreement between WOGE Saar and Studierendenwerk Saarland (Saarland student services) will ensure that finding and renting a residence is a smooth process. Studierendenwerk Saarland will be responsible for application management (registering search queries via the online portal, checking rental eligibility etc.), whilst WOGE Saar will serve as the landlord (allocating available spaces, drawing up contracts etc.) and point of contact for all matters relating to rental agreements.

The three halls of residence offer a total of 226 single and double apartments, including some accessible and some wheelchair-friendly dwellings, at a moderate monthly base rent – for example, 275 euros for a furnished single apartment. Under standard operation, the spaces will generally be available to rent for two semesters from the winter semester. The interim use currently being offered is a one-off option for the period from March to September 2026. Applications for apartments can be submitted all year round. Students eligible to rent a space will receive a rental agreement from WOGE Saar no later than one month before the relevant semester starts. Any apartment spaces that become available at short notice will be re-allocated as quickly as possible – even in the middle of a semester.

Interested students can now apply for a place in one of the halls of residence on the Studierendenwerk Saarland website at www.stw-saarland.de/en/living/ (under ‘Living in Saarbrücken’).

CEO of WOGE Saar Rita Gindorf-Wagner: ‘Today marks the start of the state’s most extensive construction project to create rental housing for students. These three top, modern halls of residence will be available for use earlier than planned. WOGE is now switching from the role of client to that of landlord. We are looking forward to strong demand from students.’

Studierendenwerk Saarland board member Carsten Rast: ‘We have been a byword for reliability in student housing for more than 70 years, focusing on quality and clear processes. Our collaboration with WOGE demonstrates the importance of experience and strong partnerships when it comes to providing students with good, affordable housing.’

Minister of Science Jakob von Weizsäcker: ‘Attractive living spaces are an important part of ensuring an attractive campus. These new halls of residence mark the first step in the Campus 1000 project, which sees us seeking to create a total of some 1,000 hall spaces on campus. This will enable us to boost our welcoming culture for new students, improve study conditions and enhance student life.’

Minister of Construction Reinhold Jost: ‘Affordable housing is a key requirement to ensure that students enjoy a good start to their studies. Thanks to a reorientation of social housing promotion and reliable building law conditions, we have put social housing construction in Saarland back on track. These new halls of residence demonstrate that the measures are working. Additional student residences also ease pressure on the residential market in general, noticeably lightening the load for other apartment seekers.’

WOGE Saar’s Chairman of the Board Torsten Lang: ‘The project is perfectly in line with the state’s housing policy objectives. I am delighted that WOGE is also taking responsibility for implementing these objectives through projects like these and definitively helping to expand subsidised housing.’

University President Prof. Dr. Ludger Santen: ‘These new halls of residence significantly increase our campus’s appeal. Affordable housing near the campus is a key factor in attracting talented students to Saarland University and offering them ideal conditions for successful studies.’

The construction costs for the entire project were around 24 million euros, of which nearly 1.65 million euros came from federal and state funds to promote social housing. Financing, project management and project coordination were handled by WOGE Saar, which was the client for the overall project and will serve as landlord in the future.

Preparations and planning are currently underway for a second construction phase on the university campus with other halls of residence and around 300 more housing spaces. WOGE Saar will once again be serving as the overall project coordinator and client.
