“Earth Image” (“Abbild der Erde”) is brightening up the terminal

Airport displays a work by the artist Markus Hohlstein

Since April, passengers and visitors passing through Saarbrücken Airport have been able to admire a very special work of art in the terminal: glass sculpture “Earth Image” by Markus Hohlstein. The artwork is on free loan from the artist, who requested that in return, a donation should be made to a youth organisation.

Airport CEO Thomas Schuck presented a cheque for €500 to the Ensheim voluntary fire department’s youth fire brigade. “We appreciate Markus Hohlstein’s willingness to use his artworks to support youth organisations”, Schuck delightedly explained. “Work with the youth fire brigade benefits Ensheim greatly. Children and young people join forces to give something back to their home town.” The airport therefore decided to present the donation to representatives from the Ensheim division of the voluntary fire department.

The 300kg, internally lit sphere stands in the bright entrance to the boarding card checking area. Hohlstein assembled around 3000 fragments to make the piece, one at a time. “When the evening sun shines into the terminal, the piece creates a very special effect”, Hohlstein explained. A globe is also perfect for an airport that welcomes people from a wide variety of destinations.

Markus Hohlstein’s works have already been displayed in other special locations.
