Campus 1000 on track: ground broken for another 306 housing spaces on Saarbr\u00fccken university campus<\/strong><\/h1>\n

Campus 1000 is continuing to take shape with the second phase of construction: the Saarland University site is gaining another student hall of residence with 306 additional housing spaces. Combined with the 234 spaces already made available, this is gradually creating a new student residential area right on campus.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The second phase of the \u2018Campus 1000\u2019 project began today with a symbolic groundbreaking ceremony. Minister-President Anke Rehlinger, Minister of Science Jakob von Weizs\u00e4cker, Chairman of the Board of WOGE Saar and State Secretary Torsten Lang, WOGE CEOs Rita Gindorf-Wagner and Mirco Bertucci, Nikolas Gross from the contracting construction company Peter Gross, University President Prof. Dr. Ludger Santen, Mayor Barbara Meyer and Studierendenwerk Saarland board member Carsten Rast all came to mark the start of the new build.<\/p>\n

A five-storey student hall of residence with 306 housing spaces is being built on the northern edge of the campus. The current estimated construction scope is around 34 million euros including incidental building costs. The project is expected to be completed in September 2028. State residential property company WOGE Saar is serving as the developer. Peter Gross Hochbau GmbH & Co. KG was commissioned to undertake the construction work.<\/p>\n

The new building offers a total of 298 apartments, including eight doubles. 55 rooms will be accessible and four apartments on the ground floor will be wheelchair-friendly. All other apartments will also be easy to access via a lift and wide corridors. Common rooms and lounges on each floor will create space for people to gather.<\/p>\n

The apartments are being financed with state and federal funds via the Saarl\u00e4ndische Investitionskreditbank (SIKB) as part of the programme to create living space for students.<\/p>\n

The project is also setting modern standards in terms of its design and energy efficiency. The building will be of solid construction made of precast concrete elements and masonry, whilst the non-load-bearing exterior walls will be made of timber. The concept also includes an extensive green roof, photovoltaic modules and a district heating supply.<\/p>\n

Campus 1000 is gaining a new student residential area on the Saarbr\u00fccken university site. The first phase of construction, which created 234 housing spaces, is already complete. The student hall of residence now being constructed will offer 306 spaces. Two other phases of construction are due to follow within a reasonable period. In the long term, this will increase the number of student apartments on campus to more than 1,000. This will create modern, affordable housing within easy reach of lecture halls, libraries and the cafeteria, thus helping to boost Saarland\u2019s appeal as a university and research hub.<\/p>\n

Minister-President Anke Rehlinger: <\/strong>\u2018Anyone who comes to Saarland to study should be able to access not only the best possible conditions for their research and studies, but also good, affordable housing. This also represents a new beginning for Saarland: we are investing in our universities, good living conditions, and above all in the young people who are coming here to shape their futures.\u2019<\/p>\n

Minister of Science Jakob von Weizs\u00e4cker:<\/strong> \u2018In science, many things begin with a single good idea. Campus 1000 was no different. But what matters is what becomes of this idea. What began as initial considerations in 2022 has now become a finished hall of residence, with another being constructed and the next in planning. Campus 1000 demonstrates that we are not just investing in brilliant minds and good research, but also in the conditions that will enable young people to study here successfully.\u2019<\/p>\n

Minister of Construction Reinhold Jost:<\/strong> \u2018We are laying the groundwork for social housing in Saarland: our modern state building regulations and significantly improved eligibility conditions for subsidies are making construction faster, easier and more affordable \u2013 and the sharp rise in investment and funding applications shows that these measures are working. The Campus 1000 project is an exceptional example of this: the 234 student housing spaces already created are now being supplemented with another 306, offering students affordable accommodation right on campus. This has a twofold effect on social housing: we are creating affordable living spaces for students, whilst also freeing up housing in towns and cities so that it can be made available at affordable rents once again.\u2019<\/p>\n

Torsten Lang, Chairman of the Board of WOGE Saar: <\/strong>\u2018We at WOGE Saar enthusiastically support the state\u2019s housing policy objectives and we are able to provide tangibly affordable housing by building another 306 student apartments. It is important that students have access to good, affordable accommodation very close to the university. Projects like this also allow us to relieve some of the strain on the overstretched housing market in the state capital.\u2019<\/p>\n

Mirco Bertucci, CEO of WOGE Saar:<\/strong> \u2018With this second phase of construction, we are offering another 306 modern and affordable housing spaces for students and further expanding the newly created residential area on campus. Combined with the existing buildings, this offers an attractive space for student life. We are therefore creating urgently needed living space as well as enhancing Saarbr\u00fccken as a university location.\u2019<\/p>\n

University President Prof. Ludger Santen:<\/strong> \u2018The second phase of construction puts us a big step closer to our goal of further developing Campus Saarbr\u00fccken as an attractive place to live, study and conduct research. Affordable housing right on campus improves study conditions and makes it easier for international students in particular to come to our university. I would like to thank the state and all of the project partners who have worked together to move this project forward.\u2019<\/p>\n

Carsten Rast, Studierendenwerk Saarland board member: <\/strong>\u2018Every housing space created relieves the burden on more young people, as the less time they have to spend searching for accommodation, the more quickly they can get down to their studies. Living right on campus also makes it easier for them to settle in quickly and stay in the region, which benefits the state as a whole.\u2019<\/p>\n
