In the presence of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Saarland Minister-President Anke Rehlinger, SHS &#8211; Stahl-Holding-Saar (SHS) presented the current status of their Power4Steel transformation project in Dillingen today and also introduced a pioneering technology scale-up in Y-SIC Holding GmbH (Y-SIC). Both projects showcase the Saarland steel industry\u2019s desire to actively shape industrial change: by decarbonising steel production and by exploiting new technological fields.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Power4Steel: the future is reaching new heights<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Power4Steel project is seeing the Saarland steel industry invest 4.6 billion euros in the climate-neutral transformation of steel production in Dillingen and V\u00f6lklingen. This is the largest individual decarbonisation project in Europe and is receiving 2.6 billion euros of funding from the federal and state governments.<\/p>\n<p>The progress of this \u2018mega project\u2019 is also clear on a local level: the transformation of both sites will involve the construction of around 120 buildings and the first are already complete. Following extensive construction preparations and foundation works, Power4Steel is now reaching new heights: the new direct reduced iron (DRI) plant, around 140 metres high and the core of the new production route, will shape the future landscape of the Dillingen site and also symbolise the scale of the transformation thanks to its size.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Y-SIC: a new field of technology with strategic importance<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Saarland steel industry is expanding its gaze beyond just conventional steel production via its involvement in Y-SIC. This deep-tech company has developed an entirely new process for the industrial manufacture of ultra-pure silicon carbide (SiC). The tool offers huge potential for technological progress, especially in the semiconductor industry.<\/p>\n<p>The Saarland steel industry is contributing to the Y-SIC scale-up as an industry partner, alongside the state of Saarland. The funding is being used to build the first commercial production facility for silicon carbide on the Dillinger site. The plan is to produce SiC powder here on an industrial scale using a newly developed, more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly process. The aim is to manufacture silicon carbide competitively in Europe for the first time. This would close a major gap in a key industry&#8217;s European value chain and reduce dependence on non-European supply chains for a strategically important material.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Quotations:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Friedrich Merz, Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2018By transitioning steel production to a more climate-friendly process and embarking on silicon carbide manufacturing, Stahl-Holding-Saar is driving the transformation of the German steel industry. In November, the federal government pledged to support the sector in order to improve its competitiveness. In addition, some vital goals have already been achieved, such as introducing improved trade defence for the steel sector. The federal government is committed to transforming the German steel industry.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Anke Rehlinger, Minister-President of Saarland:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2018Saarland wants to remain a state with strong industry. The technological reinvention of Saarland\u2019s steel industry is protecting both the climate and jobs. It is one of the largest industrial projects in Europe \u2013 and needs corresponding support from the federal government and the EU across all stages of its implementation. As a first mover, the Saarland steel industry requires protection of legitimate expectation and security of investment. Through Power4Steel and Y-SIC, SHS &#8211; Stahl-Holding-Saar is conducting valuable pioneering work and shaping the future in both Saarland and Europe. In doing so, we are also helping to make Europe more independent and resilient.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><strong>J\u00fcrgen Barke, Saarland Minister for Economic Affairs, Innovation, Digitalization and Energy:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2018Y-SIC represents what we are trying to achieve with structural change in Saarland: safeguard our industrial strengths whilst also creating new industrial value.
