Interviewer:
Mr. Secretary, the overall economic situation in Germany and also in Saarland leaves much to be desired. How do you see Saarland's economic future with regard to the innovation sector?
Peter Hauptmann:
The economy is looking up. The development of the innovation sector is decisive with sustainable growth of Saarland's economy and new jobs being created. We must improve the structures so that it becomes more appealing for companies to establish themselves in Saarland, technology companies in particular. After all we are a technology centre, so we must ensure we focus on the promising innovations. In addition we support start up companies.
Interviewer:
Saarland recognised the opportunities of nanotechnology early on and promoted these accordingly. Where do you see the nano scene in Saarland in 2020?
Peter Hauptmann:
Because Saarland recognised the potential of nanotechnology early on, we are one of the foremost players in this field. And the opportunities for growth will not be exhausted for a long time to come. Other industry sectors also profit from innovative nano products such as medical technology and automotive engineering. There are great competitive advantages to be gained in these industries through the application of nanotechnology. Saarland nanotechnology will also secure jobs in many different sectors in the medium term.
Interviewer:
In November 2009 you became Secretary of State in the Ministry of Economics and Science. At the same time you are also father to three young sons. How do you reconcile your professional responsibilities with your family life?
Peter Hauptmann:
I have my wife to thank for the fact that I can balance both. She supports me completely and in doing so encouraged me to take on the position of Secretary of State. In addition I pay a great deal of attention to time management so my family doesn't miss out. And when I'm at home I devote myself solely to my wife and children. This balance and the support of my family helps me do my job well.
Interviewer:
Do you think that there will be sufficient interesting jobs in Saarland for your sons when they begin their careers in around 15 years time?
Peter Hauptmann:
Yes I am convinced that there will be, every day we are positioning ourselves for the workforce of tomorrow. There is a shortage of professional and managerial workers due to demographic changes. Saarland is particularly affected by this. We are a technology centre which is always important for highly educated workers. Therefore, our Ministry is ensuring with numerous measures and programmes that the professional and managerial workers of tomorrow qualify and find Saarland particularly attractive. For me this is both a challenge and an incentive.
This interview with Secretary of State Peter Hauptmann was carried out by our interviewer Rose Burgard in July 2010.
